Basic Website Security Every Small Business Owner Should Know

Security is one of those topics that sounds technical enough to ignore entirely — until a site gets compromised, and it becomes the only topic that matters. A few basics worth understanding, even without a technical background:

HTTPS (the padlock next to a website address) means the connection between a visitor and your site is encrypted — nobody in between can read or tamper with what's being sent. Any legitimate website today should have this automatically; if a site doesn't, that's worth investigating.

Password reuse is the single most common way small accounts get compromised — not sophisticated hacking, just a password leaked from some unrelated breach being tried again elsewhere. A password manager, or at minimum a unique password for anything tied to your business, closes most of this risk on its own.

Email verification and two-factor login exist specifically to make it harder for someone to take over an account even if they get hold of a password. They can feel like friction, but that friction is the entire point.

None of this requires becoming a security expert. It requires knowing that these things are supposed to be happening quietly in the background, so you notice if one of them isn't. Webman handles HTTPS automatically on every site, and account security features (password reset, email verification) are built into every account by default — the boring, invisible parts of security are exactly the parts that shouldn't need your attention day to day.
