Why So Many Nigerian SMBs Still Don't Have a Website

Walk down any market street in Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt and you'll find thousands of thriving businesses — tailors, caterers, electronics dealers, event planners — almost all of them running entirely on WhatsApp and word of mouth. Ask why they don't have a website, and the answers are consistent: it's expensive, it's technical, and most of the tools out there are priced in dollars for a naira economy.

That last point matters more than it seems. A $12/month website builder doesn't sound like much until you convert it to naira at a volatile exchange rate, add a card that works internationally, and factor in that the business owner has never needed a debit card that clears US dollar transactions before. The friction isn't the idea of a website — it's everything standing between "I want one" and "I have one."

There's also a skills gap that has nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with what these platforms assume you already know: what a domain is, what hosting means, why a site needs a database, how DNS records work. None of that is obvious if you've never needed to know it.

The businesses that do get online usually do it through a relative's cousin who "does websites," at a one-time cost, with no ongoing support, no security updates, and no way to make changes themselves later. It works, until it doesn't.

None of this is a knock on Nigerian business owners — it's a knock on tools that were built for a different market and bolted onto this one. A business that can run a full operation over WhatsApp voice notes doesn't lack capability. It lacks a tool that assumes Nigeria as the default, not an afterthought.

That's the specific gap Webman is built to close: naira billing from the start, a path to a working site that doesn't require knowing what hosting even means, and support that understands the market it's serving.
